The Chairman of the Board

Alan Gwynn: Alan moved to Bath in 1974 and worked as an Insurance Broker in the City until his retirement in 2002. As well as being involved with St. John's, he is also a Member of the Rotary Club in Bath and is Chairman of the Bath - Alkmaar (Netherlands) Twinning Committee.

Former Chairman of the Board

Group Captain David Smith OBE: David’s background is in the Royal Air Force and the Police Service.  In both services he held responsibility for the planning and provision of logistics support to air and ground operations.  He has seen service in Australia, Cyprus, Bahrain, Germany, Nigeria and the Falkland Islands and, following retirement from the RAF, joined the Avon and Somerset Constabulary as Director of Finance and Administration. During his police service he was a director of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Company and a member of the Chief Police Officers national policy forum.  He has been a trustee of St John’s Hospital and a non-executive director of NHS Bath and North East Somerset (previously the Primary Care Trust) since 2004.

Robert Chapman FRICS:  Bob is a Chartered Surveyor.

Mary Hayward MA BEd: Mary has a background in nursing and nurse education, working part time as a lecturer in Public Health, with a focus on non-medical prescribing. Mary is also a volunteer with the Youth Offending Team.  She has lived in Bath for 36 years and has been a Trustee of St John’s Hospital since 2006. Recently she steered the Modernisation Sub-Committee successfully through Phase One of the Modernisation Programme.

Chairman of the Finance and General Purposes Committee

John Barnet MSc FMCA: John retired after a long career in the Civil Service which included posts as Director of Finance at Malvern in the Defence Research Establishments (now QinetiQ) and Farnborough , and on the Board of the British Army of the Rhine in Germany. He retired as the professional head of Internal Audit for the three services after postings in Whitehall and at HQs of all three services. He is a graduate of the joint service Defence College in London. Since retiring, he has worked for Tearfund’s Disaster Relief team in Khartoum and Darfur, Send-a-cow (a Bath based African development charity) and All Saints Church in Weston.

Chairman of the Investment Committee

Ian MacKenzie Bsc FFA: Ian joined the Trustee Board in December 2008 with a professional background in investment and finance, being an actuary and Executive Director of a leading wealth management firm.  As well as his financial experience, Ian has a particular interest in the care, both spiritual and physical, of our residents and beneficiaries, prompted by his own Christian faith and values. Ian is a graduate of The University of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries.  At St. John's, he is a member of the Finance & General Purposes Committee as well as the Care Committee.

Elizabeth Brooks, CBE: Liz was originally an educationalist, then specialised in teaching dyslexic people. She served for 13 years as a Director of the Dyslexia Institute then became a non-executive Director and Deputy Chairman of Ashford & St Peter’s Hospital NHS Trust, from 2000 to 2008.

Judith Pepler: Judith is a retired Solicitor who worked in Bath and is also a Parish Councillor.

Robert Newman:  Bob brings to St John’s Hospital his wide experience of property, construction, financial and corporate management. The majority of this experience was gained with an international group quantity surveying practice whilst he was resident in South-East Asia. He has worked in the UK for building contractors and the property management division of a major international bank.

Sarah Davies: Sarah Davies is a nurse by professional background and has been Chief Executive of Dorothy House Hospice Care since 1997 where she is known by her maiden name, Sarah Whitfield. She has had wide clinical and senior management experience in London before her move to the South West.  She chaired a charity in South London, which runs a number of care homes, and was a Trustee of a grant making trust for convalescent care. She is currently on the Advisory Committee for Help the Hospices, a national charity supporting independent hospices.

Harriet Bosnell: Harriet is responsible for older persons care at Somer Community Housing Trust.

Peter Franklyn CB MVO:  Peter has lived in Bath since 1986 and brings experience of both the Independent Health and Charity sectors as a result of nine years as the Chief Executive of the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability in London.  His previous career was in the Royal Navy.  He is currently Chair of the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases NHS Foundation Trust in Bath.

The Revd Nick Williams MBE MA CEng: Nick’s first career was mending aircraft in the Royal Navy and was then ordained into the Church of England spending 20 years in the parochial ministry, and finishing as the Ecumenical officer for the Diocese of Bath and Wells. For twenty years he has been involved in Social Housing currently as a non executive director of Knightstone Housing Association. His interests include sailing, hill walking and his family as they continue to grow and spread themselves around the world.
