Grant Giving
Not many people are aware that St John's Hospital has always been a grant giving Charity. As far back as the 12th century, when Bishop Reginald Fitzjocelyn set up a refuge to provide 'hospitality', in the form of food and shelter, for the poor and needy of Bath.
Then, in the 19th century, following the consolidation of the St John's Hospital Charity with the Bath Municipal Charities, an amalgamation of smaller diverse charities in the city, the new organisation was able to provide not only accommodation but also financial support for the elderly poor. In fact, it was able to achieve this by handing out weekly "out-pensions".
Nowadays, St John's supports a wide range of people, of all ages, and different organisations within the city, through the Almoner and the Community Grants Officer, overseen and guided by a devoted Board of Trustees.
